New to smart home products?
A great place to start is with one kind of smart product, such as smart lighting or blinds. Our smart kits have everything you need to get started and ready to use straight out of the box. Our smart products and kits allow you to start small and build your way up once you've got the hang of it.
Also, if you're looking to switch over from the older Trådfri Gateway and get started with the DIRIGERA Hub, this has easy migration for all your smart products you already have set up.
Your 4 Step Guide to setting up your smart home
STEP 1: DIRIGERA Hub
All about the Hub
The DIRIGERA Hub is the heart of a smart home. It enables you to connect and control your smart products via the IKEA Home Smart app.
Picture yourself being able to dim the lights, raise the blinds, listen to music, make a coffee - all without having to get out of bed. Plus, no need to re-wire your home!
The technology behind DIRIGERA
DIRIGERA Hub is built with Matter technology, a connectivity standard used in smart homes and smart products, which IKEA has been involved in developing. Matter is IP-based and builds reliable, secure Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystems.
Matter is developed to support many different product types and use cases, ensuring reliability, security, and compatibility. This allows you to buy the products you want knowing it will connect with what you already have at home.
The integrated Zigbee technology enables instant response times and an ultra-stable connection.
Good to know:
- DIRIGERA Hub requires a Wi-Fi network and connects to your router with the cable provided.
- You can connect unlimited smart devices to the DIRIGERA Hub.
- DIRIGERA Hub offers easy migration. You can bulk reset and add devices to help with migration off our older version, Trådfri Gateway.
- We continuously update the DIRIGERA hub for free with new and improved features for an even more fun and convenient way to use your smart home.
- All our smart products work independently. Adding them to the hub opens up new ways to control and customise your home – with extra functions and features when you combine two or more products.
STEP 2: Shop by category
Furnish your smart home with lighting, blinds, air purifiers & monitors, motion sensors, and speakers. With build-in tech that seamlessly pairs with your styles and decor, sometimes you can't even tell it's smart!
STEP 3: IKEA Home Smart app
The IKEA Home Smart app is the heart of your smart home
With the IKEA Home Smart app downloaded on your phone or tablet, alongside the DIRIGERA Hub, you can easily manage your smart home by browsing through the different tabs.
The app allows you and everyone in your home to do tasks like checking if the lights were left on in the hallway, what level the air purifier is running on, and the name of the song that's playing in the bedroom speaker.
Navigating the app
Start with the 'home' tab - intuitive and easy to personalise with different colours and icons. From the home screen, you can create 'rooms' so that the app mirrors your home and can give you an overview of everything that's happening in your home.
In the 'all products' tab, you can see a total list of your smart products grouped by category. Here, you can move products from one 'room' to another, turn them on/off, and see if they need to be recharged or have the batteries replaced.
In 'scenes' you can create and run scenes and schedule timers. And in 'settings' you have quick access to How-Tos and support (if you need it!).
Good to know:
- Connect IKEA Home Smart app with your voice assistant and control your home with our voice. Compatible with Google Home, Apple Home, and Amazon Alexa.
- Both smart products and the app will receive updates and continuously get even smarter – at no cost.
- Find the perfect combination of cosy mood lighting alongside your favourite romantic playlist? Or want all the lights and plugs to turn off when you leave the house? Save it as a 'scene' in the app!
- Trigger scenes with schedules or manually through one of our shortcut buttons.
STEP 4: Different ways to control your smart home
Remote Controls
Use a remote to control either one product or groups of several products at the same time. With a shortcut button, you can combine and control groups of different products, in a ‘scene’. The remotes are also easy to use for your friends and family when they come to visit. We even have splashproof remotes suitable for wet areas such as kitchen, bathroom or laundry area.
The app
Like mentioned in Step 2, the app gives you full access and control of all your smart products, organised in ‘rooms’. You add the rooms you want, and personalise them with a name and colour. In this way, the app reflects your home, making it fast and simple to see and control what’s going on.
Motion
Automatic control triggered by motion makes the home feel safer and more comfortable. Use it to turn the lights on in dark spaces, such as the walk to the bathroom in the night, or in places where your hands are often full, like near the front door, in the stairways, storage, or laundry areas. It’s also an idea for the wardrobe, turning the built-in lights on when you open it.
Voice
Control your smart products with your voice. Super convenient if both hands are occupied with something else or the room is dark. Works with Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri through integrations in the IKEA Home smart app.

Imagine a home – a smart home – that automates the little tasks you do every morning. Like raising the blinds or playing your favourite playlist. Connected devices don’t just make life easier, they make it better, and it can all start at IKEA.
What is a smart home?
A smart home is a home containing connected devices – products that can be controlled via the internet from your smartphone, tablet, or through a virtual assistant.
Take a look at our SYMFONISK collection, for example, built and designed in collaboration with Sonos for home automation. The Wi-Fi-enabled lamp, with built-in speakers, combines high quality sound with soft lighting, meaning one less cord, one less power socket, and one less device.
What is a smart home device?
Devices that are connected to the internet and controlled through a smartphone or by a virtual assistant, are ‘smart’ devices. They’re designed to make your life easier, either by automating common tasks or giving you access to more information.
How do you make a smart home?
Getting started with smart home technology is simple, but the most important thing you’ll need is good Wi-Fi signal, as all devices need to be connected to the internet to operate. And then it’s simply a case of collecting and installing the devices that will make your life easier.
